Making Music With Found Objects / Salina Kuo

Music is an inherent part of humanity, proven by its ability to exist globally and document generations of diverse narratives. As such, music should be accessible to all. However, under systems of oppression, like white supremacy and capitalism, marginalized populations have historically been banned from music-making through restricting access to instruments. This presentation will contextualize “found objects” by providing a brief history of making music with what is readily available--in other words, what has not been taken from you--like the origin of the steel pan, and jug bands. Then, we will discuss my practice as a percussionist, composer, and educator.

Creative Sound Capture: Musical Creations with Everyday Sounds / Edward Enman

We are almost always surrounded by sound. Natural and human-made sounds provide an ongoing soundtrack to our everyday. It is more accessible than it has ever been to capture these sounds and work with them in musical creations.

I will describe my personal process in recording and manipulating samples to use in recorded elements of my compositions. I will focus on the creative approach in using these sounds as instruments in the composing process, and how I create tracks in the simplest, but most useful ways. From observation, listening, and visualisation to the nitty-gritty of the basics of sound editing, mixing, and performance logistics.

Streamlining and simplicity will lead the way, and I will explore how I have integrated the recorded and the live elements in my compositions. As this is an ongoing journey in discovery, I will encourage an open dialogue, and the opportunity for sharing experiences.

The music we create reflects our surroundings and place in time. When the sounds of these surroundings are incorporated into our musical works, the effect can be powerfully revealing, and deeply rewarding.
